I've seen lots of academics be book smart, but can't actually perform those tasks. I'd like to see this professor, build his house, do his own plumbing, & electrical work. I mean what a snob.

As a solidly blue collar worker who goes home at the end of every day covered in aluminum dust, titanium chips, machine coolant, and the like, I personally would not take offense to such a comment. The context of the statement matters, but even then, those of us who work in manual labor and manufacturing take a lot of pride in that. The flippant comments of one or two pinhead academics won’t change that. Could also just be a slang term that he used offhand without making any particular value judgment.
