Obscure or forgotten movies from childhood

Obscure or forgotten movies from childhood

Through a random series of thought I was reminded of a movie I used to love as a kid called Heavyweights about a group of... Well .. heavy kids at a fat camp. Had Ben Stiller in it doing a beta test of his future Dodgeball character.

Made me think of other movies as a kid nobody talks about anymore but once we're popular, like Bend it like Beckham.

Anyone want to share movies they remember but nobody has ever seen/never talks about?

Blank check, I rarely meet someone who remembers that movie

Daddy Gru

It’s not super obscure but I feel like no one talks about The Land Before Time anymore, or that amazing Pizza Hut ad that was right before it on the old VHS tape back in the day.

Daniel and I watched Willow a few months ago. It's one of my favorites! He'd never seen it before lmao

I'll have to look up some of these otherentions. Vision Quest sounds familiar

I swear I've seen heavyweights before. They were in like "fat camp" and they all were still hiding snacks and never losing weight then someone comes in and takes over and gets super strict. Could be a different movie but it was so long ago

💖 Neon™ Waifu 💖

Dec 5, 2024 21:18

@comax that's the movie! Lol. Ben Stiller plays the new Camp leader who is a fitness nut

Dec 5, 2024 21:47

I thought once I started reading your post that I recognized it. I do not remember it being Ben Still so I'll def be gonig check it out again. I remember being pretty young when that movie came out.

The old Beetlejuice cartoons were rarely known about, I used to watch them when I was 4/5. I found some vhs as a teenager and absolutely loved them. Now they can be streamed, but for a while a lot people didn't remember or hadn't seen them.

Daddy Gru

Dec 7, 2024 05:19

I remember seeing them but not really being into the show.

I think there was a movie called 3 Ninjas about 3 teenagers who were ninjas that we saw at the drive-in once. You certainly never hear about that movie these days.

Crowcifiction

Dec 7, 2024 09:42

That's because those 3 ninjas movies were lame, a bunch of kids beating up the canon fodder henchmen with ease. There were about 3 of those movies, and fit right in in the 90's with the OG power rangers era.

Homeward Bound made me want to have a pet cat

Another one, anyone remember The Magic Voyage? A movie Glorifying Columbus's achievements in a sort of back handed way ( made him look dumb( that definitely wouldn't be made today? Lmao

Dec 8, 2024 19:18

Can’t forget shia labeouf as a kid even stevens

Daddy Gru

Dec 9, 2024 15:42

I do not remember The Magic Voyage, unfortunately. It sounds kind of funny though.

Does anyone else remember The Little Prince? It was an animated short movie. I’ll never forget that theme song…

“The little prince
From outer space
Can catch a shooting star
And sail away…”

A.P Bio

Though it just started airing in 2017.

I DO consider myself a forever child, and HAS anyone seen it? Cause I recently discovered this hidden gem on the Netflix and am smitten.

Fans of It's Always Sunny, if you haven't indulged, go get you some!

Jaynuary

Dec 11, 2024 13:43

A.P Bio is great, its from that year they all decided to do something else, Mac did Mythic Quest and Dee did The Mick, but The Mick was the best one, 100% would recommend if you never saw it, shame it got cancelled

Wasn't sure it was real until I saw in online years back.

TheDarkGeek

Dec 19, 2024 20:58

well its a tie for favorite movie between hackers and SLC Punk

Daddy Gru

Dec 20, 2024 13:21

SLC Punk is a movie I haven’t thought about in a long time too.

What about those animated American Tale movies about the mice who emigrate from the old world to America or something like that?

It's called An American Tail and those mice are the Mousekewitz family smh

Evil Alien Conquerors - starring Diedrich Bader and Chris Parnell.

Another I can think of is...Titan A.E.

Daddy Gru

Dec 23, 2024 18:54

Clerks is a gem. Clerks 2, while a totally different vibe, is also great. Mallrats, for whatever reason, does not seem to hold up as well, and that’s a shame.

Jaynuary

Dec 23, 2024 19:03

Mallrats is important because it teaches children to respect and fear escalators.

Dec 26, 2024 23:31

Dec 28, 2024 22:10

My older brother told me when I was seven that Count Orlock/Max Shreck from the original Nosferatu was actually a real vampire and they filmed him as himself.

Obviously with older eyes you'll see a couple of issues with that statement, not including the fact they don't exist (sorry).

But to my rabbit pink ears it sounded half plausible, and let's not forget that guy looked horrifying. Imagine existing for so long that the years have slowly smoothed away your entire mind. So eventually the guy has the intellect of a slightly self-aware mosquito.

Dec 30, 2024 19:28

Definitely Wesley Snipes. His performance in US Marshals is one of the greatest gifts to cinema-going audiences in the long and winding history of major motion pictures. What an absolutely brilliant and inspiring actor.

Operation Irony.

Jan 4, 2025 01:48

Laser Tag Academy.

It's a cartoon movie about these heros with laser pistol thingies.

I guess that would count as obscure.

Jim

Jan 4, 2025 02:21

Laser Quest/laser-tag were catnip to a kids imagination. I used to daydream when I was little that we'd somehow recruit and organise about eight hundred kids into two giant teams. They would face off across one third of er..Swindon;and it would be epic.
Obviously that would cause utter chaos in a quiet little town like that; and the potential for harm could result from anything like several scraped-knees or the SAS being called-in to take us out before we stole the Ice-Cream Van.
Probably should of been on Ritalin.

💖 Neon™ Waifu 💖

Jan 8, 2025 02:46

I can definitively say I've never heard of Laser Tag Academy

Dog Soldiers is the best film about a man punching a werewolf.

Eistir

Jan 19, 2025 00:08

I remember Heavyweights! I did not know that about Ben Stiller's character.

The one movie I was obsessed with as a kid was Pixel Perfect, partially because of Ricky from Phil of the Future haha. But it was such early 2000s goodness.

Vorschlag

Jan 19, 2025 10:00

Haha return to Oz with the least scary villains either, idiots with rollarskates for hands and feet but somehow still f**ked up a lot of kids.... the new witch was wonderfully dark, the actor that plays Dorothy may seem very familiar... don't look it up wait till it clicks, also the asylum has the feel of an Emily Autumn album, well worth the watch.

If you just want movies wake kids up to reality and introduce death and darkness to their little worlds:
Watership down (not the Yankee remake that ruins it).

Off topic... Dino Riders....
The last unicorn
Plague dogs
And if course everyone loves the never ending story... AaarTaaaaax....

For me it was one of the nightmare on elm street movies, not a kill scene, just his skin, I became petrified of house fires or anything else that could leave my skin like that.

Daddy Gru

Jan 19, 2025 18:51

The Brave Little Toaster! Wow, what a reference, hadn’t thought of that one in ages.

Bloodmoon420

3 O'Clock High is from the 80s about a kid who gets messed with by a bully so they meet at 3pm and the nerdy kid kicks the s**t out of the bully. The storytelling is better than it sounds.
