What are the things you could watch a thousand times and never get bored of it? The things that every time they’re on tv, you immediately stop whatever you’re doing and drop into a coma of sentimentality and nostalgia for three hours to watch it. They aren’t necessarily your favorite thing, but they have the unique and inscrutable quality of endless rewatchability.

Hmm 🤔 not my favourite, don't get bored of, nostalgic, go into coma.

Jezz I'm going to sound like a nanna with some of the shows I offer up. 🤭 golden girls, cheers, the middle, murder she wrote, becker, something about that character I relate too. Like I give s**t about people's well-being, but I can also be a grumpy, misanthropic jerk. I feel that on the inside sometimes. I don't go around acting or behaving like that, to be clear. Lol

Late 2000's to mid 10 cartoon network shows and commercials. Chowder, flapjack, adventure time, regular show, SWTCW, Courage the cowardly dog, Code name: KND, the CN commercial with the noods that would grab an orb of the show that you would watch and turn into a character from it.

A lot of goths like princess bride, but I can't stand it. You can look at me sideways, & down your nose at me for that. Haha

Vorschlag

Jan 2, 2025 11:40

The princess bride falls into that category for me with my HEMA students ... especially since the fight scene references four historical masters and the original book references a 5th, I mean the sword work still isn't accurate or functional (no sword work in any movie or series is... or 90% of youtube for that matter) but it's amazingly choreographed.

Jan 2, 2025 11:58

Hema ? Have you ever participated in larping?

I'm going to look up more about Hema sounds interesting

Vorschlag

Jan 2, 2025 12:14

No, the closest I would get to a larping would be VtM or VDA and even then I'd have to go completely non combatant because I would lose my temper with their unrealistic approach to combat, especially in any historical setting with a martial art or weapon I've studied.
Even for my table top group we have had to scratch build an entire rule set for total realism in combat so every combat becomes a matter of "enter at your own risk" if you aren't better equiped/more skilled or have numerical supremacy, so far it's still being play tested but it's made combat far more entertaining and engaging for people with a background in historical weapon arts, martial arts etc ... I want to play test it in a Roman Gladiator campaign so they are forced to indulge to fight for their characters lives in every session but no takers for that yet.... anyway going way off topic...

Weary whisper

Jan 2, 2025 15:07

Yes I just looked up Hema, so it's just another form of self defence, but modelled on a old western style of combat?

I've attended a larping event, my ex was a blacksmith & artist, he thought he could sell them weaponry, turns out they just use fake armer, & strangely they were clicky, unwelcoming, & had some weird highrachy snobbery going on, perhaps they were getting into character early with there fake waepons.. Lol 😄

Vorschlag

Jan 2, 2025 23:37

Not quite it's an umbrella term for the study and reconstruction of historical European martial arts in an attempt to resurrect them, basically it's people trying to rebuild systems of martial arts, martial sports and self defense systems that died out via surviving manuals and treatises written by masters of the arts.

It includes everything from the earliest surviving treatise on sword play from the 14th century to folk wrestling styles, pugilism and even cane and umbrella self defence the 19th and early 20th century.
To some degree the term is used incorrectly to refer to all Wma (western martial arts) but living traditions that have retained a lineage don't have to be rebuilt.. so....

Sadly it has largely been swamped by what I will here politely refer to as the "sports hema" crowd who are more interested in playing tiggy with vaguely sword shaped objects than reconstructing anything as a fully functional and historically accurate martial art but there is still one in every ten groups who are trying to do things properly.

Larpers - fight with foam weapons
Reenactors - fight or pretend to fight in historical equipment with no interest in historical accuracy or functionality of technique.
SCA - society for creative anachronism... enough said
Bohurt - fight in loosely historical based armour in a historical rule tournament rule set described in the period as black smiths fighting, no historical system to the combat style and done in groups attempting to knock each other over.
Sports "Hema" - people using loosely historical based training weapons and mimicking Olympic fencing
HEMA - the study, interpretation, practice and reconstruction of dead systems from across centuries and across Europe, some with martial intent (kill or disable) others with sportive or self defence applications in an attempt to reconstruct these in as close to their original form as can be done within the confines of modern law and sensibilities...Sadly alot of HEMA practitioners/students are soft or softer than martial artists from other disciplines which is why sports "Hema" has taken off.

We now return you to your usual scheduled program.....

Weary whisper

Jan 3, 2025 06:59

That's a much better description of it. It's always better to hear from someone that actually participates in it. Thanks 😊

Twiggy lol 😆

Yes the Larping & foam weapons & things that aren't historically accurate. I found it weird they seem to have no appreciation that my ex made real crafted hand, swords, daggers, & armour, this is a old trade that would of provided those in battle with the weaponry they needed, yet it seemed they were only interested in pretend fighting with foam swords & didn't really have respect for the history. Lol I don't get it completely, each to there own. Lol

They are likely the same type of DnD players who call it "chainmail" think that you "fire a bow" think the fuller in a sword is a "blood groove" and see nothing wrong with the terrible sword play in every movie and television show that includes swords.

I'd would suggest reaching out to the SCA, Bohurt and maybe reenactment groups in your area they are the most likely to be potential customers for historical armour and equipment, I wish HEMA did as well but all the groups that have gone in the sport direction encourage all their new members to go with modern equipment.
I let my students go either way historical or modern, i just dont want to see a mishmash of the two ... I just warn them the historical route is a lot more expensive, i mean my helm alone was $700 then there's the haubergeon etc etc.

I started in that direction myself but never finished my late 14th century kit as I wound up doing everything from 14th century knightly arts to 18th century duelling systems and everything in between plus 19th century self defence systems.
I'd love to do historicaal gear but you can imagine having a full set for every century or half century that im interested in will get rather... expensive...

Weary whisper

Jan 3, 2025 11:17

Well, maybe that's just it, there more interested in the story telling & fantasy, & other elements. Not so much the history or accurate execution.

I see where it frustrate you though, one of my good friends was an airbrush artist for decades, everytime he watches transformers, he says meagan fox is airbrushing some motorbike inaccurately & it drives him crazy. He can't relax & see that it's meant to be a s*xy scene, because it involves something he takes seriously. It actually makes me laugh, how much he can't let that go. 😂

Thanks for the hot tip. I'm still friends with that ex, so I'll mention that too him. 🙂 I'm sure he will appreciate.

Reality is worthless and everything is a waste of life, it's just a matter of what distraction will help pass your time the easiest.

I workout when I watch TV, sometimes I'll even play a finger plucking riff over and over again to get better at it. I utilize my TV time.

Go dumr, go! 🙂🤭

I do strength training at a gym now, because I use to be an inside & outside jogger/runner. I have a knee injury, so I'm using all the strength machines, to get my knee & overall body strong, strength training gets more important as you get older I think. I have a treadmill at home. I use to watch movies & shows whilst I ran on that. I really miss running, but I need to get strong, so I can go back to it. Physio has helped. Multi tasking, is key. 🙂 hehe

I studied a short film course over a decade ago, we made a few horrible student films. 😆 we took turns in different roles, from holding the boom, to filming, acting, directing, to story boarding etc it was interesting & a good group of people, you could talk the creative aspects of film. It was super fun.

Also my partner studied arts, & particularly stop motion & animation at university. Like many artists he doesn't work in that field to make a living, but he spends his time, sculpting characters, making little sets, sketching & doing animation on his computer. We talk a lot about story telling, themes, & enjoy lots of different mediums of film together. 🙂

I guess it's how you view film etc... if you're just a mindless couch potato, watching lots of propaganda & rubbish, orrrr you're watching more quality, the creative, artistic, & being mindful about what you're taking in. Remembering to also have other hobbies in your life, & at times being present, getting outside in nature, looking after yourself etc.... I appreciate all creative forms, music obviously, theatrics, film, reading & literature, going to galleries etc. I also love analysing stuff, to a deeper extent & being a critical thinker, when I can.

I understand where people are coming from, when they say watching TV is crap. I lived many years without a TV. Depends how you use it, view it, see it in my opinion. My tv doesn't go on till 8pm in the evening, sometimes later. Sometimes not at all.
