No, i don't expect a free site to do all that. It's not that hard to search an area and look at profiles as it's not exactly a busy site!
I wouldn't want to pay for a better site, and if they did your suggestion it wouldn't attract more people, especially with a cost to implement it.

Best option is to probably meet those women IRL. Go where they go, guitar stores, jam sessions, etc

You can actually do a site search looking for those type of profiles as the site is open to anyone to look

E.G., In the google submit box write:-

musician play site:altscene.com

This will output data along those lines, you can play around with search terms

Problem is though that those profiles may not be active, the active profiles are the ones you see when you log into your landing page..

Incidentally, Neil wasn't receptive to my idea to tweak the UK geography options to include Glasgow Strathclyde conurbation where four fifths of the Scots live, so changes to the site may be very unlikely lol

Workarounds are the way forwards here...
