I'm a Scottish chap who is half-American on his Mum's side (she, like my Gran's side, are from Louisiana and my Papa's from Mississippi).
I am very much a man of opposites. Geeky/bookish on the one hand but with a bit of a wild streak, too, on the other. I am not quite the hedonist I once was because of, y'know, having to 'adult' but I still have a very pronounced sense of fun.
I'm a musician. I play guitar, drums, and bass (all very badly) but tend to sing (even more badly- I think of myself more of a lyricist than a singer, really) when in a band. I've done lots of gigging/recording and am very passionate about music. I like post-punk, desert rock, blues, jazz, opera, prog rock, punk, acid rock, new wave, cold wave, dark wave, no wave, art rock, avant-garde, classical, indie, reggae, ska, Britpop, shoegaze, dream pop, country, folk, glam, goth, grunge, thrash, and some pop, trip-hop and suchlike.
I am also into the arts and culture more broadly. I love literature (English, French, American, and Russian, especially), poetry, and theatre. I also try to read widely across the humanities and social sciences and am an avid book collector.
I am also into broader geek culture (sci-fi, fantasy, graphic novels, video games etc) and comedy and laughter are fundamental to my life, too.
For work, I recently finished a doctorate in social policy (my undergraduate degree was in social and economic history) and I teach at my university. I also work a part-time job on top of that so I might be slow to reply as this is a crazy busy time in my life.
My doctoral research looks at poverty because I want to make the world a better place and like to think I have the sort of warm and empathetic nature one would associate with such a profession. I have also been an activist since I was a teenager.
I am a bit of an eccentric. I have quite a flamboyant sense of style and dress. I also collect cuddly penguin toys.
