Patricia Day (Copenhagen, Denmark; vocals/upright bass) and Kim Nekroman (b. Dan Gaarde, Copenhagen, Denmark; guitar) were, respectively, key figures on the Danish punk and psychobilly scenes when they elected to join forces in a new project in 1996. Drummer Henrik Niedermeier, who had played with Nekroman in his band Nekromantix, joined the duo in the original line-up of HorrorPops. Rhythm guitarist Caz The Clash joined the trio for their live shows, which also regularly featured go-go dancers and helped spread the band’s profile throughout Scandinavia. Their energetic fusion of pop punk and rockabilly proved hugely popular on stage, but apart from a widely bootlegged seven-track demo CD it was not until late 2003 that the band released an official single (‘Ghouls’/‘Psychobitches Outta Hell’). They also signed a contract with US hardcore gurus Tim Armstrong and Brett Gurewitz’s Hellcat Records label, and it was in North America that the band was increasingly making waves, although a projected national tour was cancelled due to visa problems. The 2003 album Hell Yeah!, featured the tracks from the 1999 demo CD alongside six new recordings.
Gurewitz produced the 2005 follow-up, Bring It On!, which also featured new rhythm guitarist Geoff Kresge (ex-AFI) and reprised the debut’s joyful blend of new wave, punk, rockabilly and ska. Kresge left in July 2007 prior to the recording of the band’s third album, Kiss Kiss Kill Kill. By now the trio were genuine cult stars in North America, having joined the Warped Tour and broken into the mainstream charts.
