Shaun Martland, 22, artist, (dream weaver...)
Well, I say artist, I draw cartoons to supplement my day job under the pseudonym of Mr.Picto. I also animate from time to time, as an animation graduate, I suppose it is my prerogative to do so when the feeling takes me.
As a cartoonist, I can appriciate the work of others, which perhaps explains my deep love for all kinds of comic book. Or perhaps I'm just in love with the fantasy of it all. Either way, the habit is beyond control now. Anyone who finds themselves for some reason interested in my will have to deal with this, and deal with how protective I am over these ridiculous collections of paper and ink.
I tend to game, but less so recently, as I've been busy with commissions and the day job. My favourites being the Silent Hill franchise, the early Resident Evil games, the Fallout series and the works of Team Ico.
So I tend to draw a lot. But when I'm not doing that, I like to walk. I walk EVERYWHERE! I hate paying overpriced bus fares and I like the exercise. I rarely watch Tv, if a show catches my eye, I'll catch it online, like Boardwalk Empire for example, it makes me want to live in the 20's, those suits were FINE. I consider my film taste rather good.
I suppose anything else you might want to know is encroaching on more personal territory, so take a good look at my pictures, make up your mind, and contact me somehow and we'll talk. Not looking for a relationship, but friends are cool.
What I’m doing with my life...
I work full time in an opticians, though this isn't what I want to do with my life. I'm an animator and illustrator, so I'm trying to make it in that world, it's not easy though.
I’m really good at...
Drawing, well, I like to think so anyway. I get extra money by drawing commissioned cartoons.
The first things people usually notice about me...
I'm tall, and I wear glasses. BEARD.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food...
Anything Jules Vern or Douglas Adams book wise, though I read comics a lot more than general books. In that respect, there are so many to choose from, can't go wrong with Geoff Johns and Grant Morrison really for modern comics. DC over Marvel really, so Green Lantern and Batman for the most part. Also love Hellblazer. Alan Moore's Watchmen will always remain a firm favourite, so much so, I have a related tattoo. So because of this, I can generally be found wandering down Friargate towards the comic shop.
Music wise, my taste is rather eclectic. Many of my favourite bands don't really register on peoples radars, for example, I have seen Electric Six every year for the past three, and would never pass up the chance to do so again. I love Talking Heads, David Byrne, They Might be Giants, Placebo, The Offspring, Music wise, my taste is rather eclectic. Many of my favourite bands don't really register on peoples radars, for example, I have seen Electric Six every year for the past three, and would never pass up the chance to do so again. I love Talking Heads, Wheatus, Reel Big Fish, Flogging Molly, Less Than Jake, Blind Melon, NOFX, Pulp, The Who, Smashing Pumpkins, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, The Beach Boys, Mindless Self Indulgence, Manic Street Preachers, Radiohead, Queen, Bright Eyes, David Bowie, I could go on, but I won't. All I ask is that you respect my musical taste and trust me how good bands like Wheatus and Electric Six are. Wheatus, Reel Big Fish, Flogging Molly, Less Than Jake, Blind Melon, Pixies, Pulp, Jarvis c**ker, David Byrne, Soundgarden, Audioslave, Chris Cornell, Weezer, The Who, Smashing Pumpkins, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, The Beach Boys, Mindless Self Indulgence, Manic Street Preachers, David Bowie, I could go on, but I won't. All I ask is that you respect my musical taste and trust me how good bands like Wheatus and Electric Six are.
Movie wise, with the comic book thing, I kind of HAVE to like the related movies as a genre, but I'm highly critical and not too easily pleased when it comes to their execution, Green Lantern, for example, just made me sad. However, Marvel's latest run of films have been amazing. But I have a particular love for anything by Kevin Smith and Tarantino.
Don't watch much Tv, just tend to stream anything that takes my fancy. Comedies like Community, Big Bang Theory, How I met your Mother, Garth Merenghi's Darkplace, Green Wing, Big Train, Mighty Boosh, That Mitchell and Webb look, Never Mind the Buzzc**ks, etc. I'm currently really enjoying Boardwalk Empire, and keep meaning to watch more of Breaking Bad, would be nice to have some company for that. But more than anything, I watch cartoons, I suppose, as an animator, that's my prerogative, but I just always have loved them. All the 90's DC animated series I could watch over and over, Invader Zim is a firm favourite, Adventure Time and Regular show are amazing. Metalocalypse, Venture Bros and Harvey Birdman from Adult Swim are are super-awesome.
I love all kinds of food, theres rarely anything I dislike these days.
The six things I could never do without
Pencil, paper, comics, music, food and my pets.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
ideas for cartoons.
On a typical Friday night I am...
Usually in, because I work Saturdays, but sometimes I'll head out to Warehouse in Preston and face the hangover in the morning.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I have a secret deep love for cooking shows. Its usually for the food...
You should message me if...
You find me interesting and think we'd get on. Just kind of trying to get outside my friendship group, not that I dislike them or anything, just need something new. Not looking for a relationship right now, just ended one, so friendship would be great
