I suppose this blank here is the selling space. This is where we stoke dreams of future romantic encounters not yet had, and tease our expectations of what awaits around the corner with a friendly interested stranger....
If only.
I find most dating romance to be a bit false. I am a romantic but I'm a realist first. I appreciate creative expressions of pasion but will gag at a dozen roses. Too often people misrepresent their own feelings in dating to look better or impress. This builds a false self that you have to maintain which will destroy the relationship & both parties happiness in the future.
I am a bit complex for such things, and if that's what you are looking for, probably best you move on. If I get to love a person though its a whole different story.
I am an optimist who thinks things are going to go wrong. I am a vegan (i won't try to convert you) who gets a thrill from MMA and boxing. I am a public servant who distrusts the public sometimes. I am an individualist loner who hates living alone. I am an intellectual who appreciates the Three Stooges. I am religiously very well read and have no faith. I am a compassionate person who can be mean without regret when needed. I am blunt but very diplomatic.
If someone somewhere made art, or left some trace of themselves and what they felt, chances are I will like it. If it is infused with the spirit of it's creator, I'll REALLY like it. This runs the row from movies to graffiti, cartoons to commercials, architecture to video games, culture jamming to comic books. Even worse is I often see some small salvageable "part" of a work and will hijack that working "part" for my own artistic purposes. This results in collages, music samples, mashups, found media works, etc. So to answer the music/movies/art question a range of what I've seen might be better;
Movies - Anything from B-Movies to Exploitation Films to Cutups/Mashups to Imports to blockbuster popcorn movies to horror. I've watched so much Kung-Fu I can't keep it all straight! You see it's not just a story, its a bunch of people trying to make something cohesive. Every film has at least 5 min of awesome moments. Even when the whole thing is crap I can watch it for laughs. Some directors I'm fond of - David Fincher, Tikashe Mikke, Robert Rodriguez, Old Tarentino, Ridley Scott, Wes Craven, Ang Lee, Kubarick, yadayada....look netflix and "I love Video" are my friends is what you need to know.
Books - Too many to list or narrow down. It would be instructive to say I have a list of books on my phone from whenever anyone tells me to read anything (no matter who, even a bum on the bus bench) that I pick up whenever I'm at Half Price and a small shelf of ones I've bought but not yet read. The list is never short, and the shelf is constantly changing. Recently I've been into Richard Dawkins, Rollins (Grown Man Cry), Gladwell (the tipping point), pulp Heinlein, Palahniuk (Pigmy & Fight Club again), Cormac McCarthy (the Pretty Horses), George Carlin & George Bush. Yeah thats right, George Carlin to George Bush...it looks weird now that I typed it, but not 'cause I'm a fan, but he's a facinating character like Nixon....GWB that is...
Music - Oh man where to start in Austin with this one. I like everything? That isn't right, and in this town, what is on your MP3/phone is best to get an idea so, random sample from my headsets on shuffle;
Tyva Kyzys (Mongolian Throat Singing)
Atmosphere
James Brown (Funky Drummer!)
Vice Squad
Daft Punk
Ram Trilogy
Venetian Snares
Blatz
Dawn Penn
Tom Jones
Wolfmother
Prince
AlecEmpire
Radiohead
Mexican Institute of Sound
Xanopticon
Immortal Technique
So I'm guessing the astute people out there are googling a few of these and going "gawd what the hell...". I run the range from House Music (acid to progressive), Drum & Bass, Jungle (Raga and otherwise), Old Rock, Old Jazz, NeoJazz, Blues, Old Country, Hip Hop (all eras), 80's Pop, New Wave, Old Punk, Pop Punk, Hardcore, grindcore, Clubbangging, Dancehall, ambient, folk, funk, soul, R&B etc etc etc. As long as people put their hearts into it you can tell. No one tempo range or chord set or genre should ever restrict an artistic talent. If I don't like the whole track, chances are I'll like some break or hook or horn hit enough to liberate it from the garbage it was recorded with or I'll repurpose the whole thing into a different form than it started. I like to play with my music.
I'm pretty centered ethically, a vegan (not to worry i don't preach the veggies but like to lead by positive example....corny as that is...) atheist (once again won't preach) who can give or endure discomfort to do the right thing. I've worked public service in emergency management and will always stop to aid when things have gone insane for a stranger. I've a bit of the "White Knight" complex, but I have no problem telling people the truth rather than spare their feelings.
My hobbies include making art, (collages, computer visual constructs, cutups, music, ambient sounds) consuming art, watching people, hearing strange or interesting stories & meeting interesting people. I love hearing new ideas and concepts. I like being in a group of people getting something done. I can be a bit of a dork about medical things (used to work EMS) and sociology. I love hypothetical thinking, ie; sitting at a cafe and an armored truck drops a bag of money...what do you do with it?, or if Zombie apocalypse happpened, what do we do?, or how exactly can we shoot our nuclear waste into the sun?...and so on. I appreciate the elegant simplicity of nature and try to respect all creatures for what they are. I am not an "outdoors" person but love chilling at Twin Falls and have been known to end work shifts with a dive in Barton straight outta work clothes and know my way around enough to survive in the wild without aid. I don't really follow any sports at all but can watch them easy enough. If ya gotta get a sports fix with me put on some boxing or mma and we'll be square.
I love hanging out with my kid. He's almost 5, fiercely intelligent and is an old soul. He is a very tough & hard headed kid and I never feel like I have a child around me, and that's hard to explain until you meet him. I raise him on the "explain everything" idea so if you can't handle a fresh set of eyes asking lots of questions then I will not be for you.
Outside of that I like philosophy, psychology, sociology, politics and human experience.
I'm attracted to strong, independent women who can handle themselves. This means being awake and being able to get what needs to be done done. I don't look it but I love dyed hair and tattoos and piercings. Essentially the more you define your own definition of beauty, the more likely I am able to see the beauty in you.
I'm looking for an intelligent partner in crime with whom to suck every last drop of experience from life. A reasoned hedonist! A rational troubador! A person who can be responsible and still tear a place up when the time is right. A person who feels life's fleeting grasp and keeps their eyes open thirsty for anything that would brighten their day.
A person awake to their own awesome potential to shape their world.
Cheers!
