BrokeNCYDE is an alternative musical group based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Their sound is best described as a mix of screamo and hip-hop, with their later work having a strong crunk-feeling. The current members of the band are Se7en,Mikl, Phat J, and Antz. They are currently managed by the Artery Foundation, a team that has discovered other popular bands such as Alesana, The Devil Wears Prada, and Carnifex. BrokeNCYDE was the brainchild of the lead singers Se7en and Mikl. They had been friends in high school, and after discussing relationship problems with each other, decided to start a band. According to them, the etymology of their band name comes from the idea of being "Broken inside", hence Brokencyde.[1] From there, they began to write more lyrics and songs and promote themselves online. In due time, the other two members, under the pseudonyms "Phat J" and "Antz", joined the band. [edit] Internet Success Soon after their conception, the band created a profile on the social networking site Myspace. For a year or so, they did not upload music to their profile and only allowed their music to disseminate throughout the Internet on their own. When they decided to finally add their music to their profile, there was an explosion of positive activity. [1] They have a loyal following of fans, as evidenced by the nearly 150,000 contacts and 11.5 million total song plays they have recieved on their Myspace profile as of November 2008. [3] [edit] TRL Hundreds of Brokencyde fans flooded MTV's Total Request Live with requests throughout 2008, landing the band a performance on the show in July where they played "Under the Radar" for millions of viewers. [4] In the months leading up to their appearance, they were averaging 45,000 plays a day on their Myspace profile. [5] As of November 2008, they were averaging 80,000 daily plays[4], nearly an 80% increase. [edit] Musical style and influences BrokeNCYDE's musical style has been described as "crunk-screamo"[1], and "screamo and hip-hop"[6] in the few interviews they have sat for. According to the band, their musical influences are "everything that is popular, put into one box and blown up", and that mixing various styles together to create a hybrid style is better than producing "same old thing". They refer to this style as "crunkcore".
